The tire size 245/45 YR 16 indicates:

  • The tire width is 245mm at its widest point (not just the tread width).
  • The height of the tire sidewall is 45% of 245mm.
  • The tire is rated Y, which means it has been successfully tested for 1 hour at a speed of 186mph or 300km/h.
  • The R indicates that the tire has a radial design.
  • 16 means this tire can only be fitted onto a 16” wheel.

P7 PIRELLI CINTURATO ™ The Sports Car Tire

During the 1970s, a new breed of supercars needed a new generation of tire that was both extra-wide and low-profile. Pirelli played a pivotal role in this development and introduced the P7 tire in 1974. The P7 tire featured an innovative internal structure that allowed for a considerable reduction in profile while increasing its breadth significantly. This made it possible to drive road cars with previously unimaginable levels of power.

The P7 tire's tread design was a popular choice among car enthusiasts in the 1970s and 1980s, and a staple among the early supercars.

245/45 R 16 PIRELLI CINTURATO ™ P7 for Porsche Cars

Starting from 1985, the PIRELLI P7 tire model became available as an option for Porsche vehicles in the 16-inch size. The 245/45 R 16 PIRELLI CINTURATO ™ P7 size was used as the rear tire for high-performance cars such as 911 Turbo, 911 Turbo Sport, 928 S, 911 Carrera Super Sport, 911 Targa, 944 Lux, S, S2, Turbo, and Turbo S models.

The front wheels of these vehicles were fitted with either 205/55 R 16 PIRELLI CINTURATO ™ P7 N or 225/50 R 16 PIRELLI CINTURATO ™ P7 N tires to match with the 245/45 R 16 PIRELLI CINTURATO ™ P7 on the rear wheel.



245/45 VR 16 PIRELLI CINTURATO ™ P7 Speed Rating

Upon its initial release, the 245/45 YR 16 PIRELLI CINTURATO ™ P7 possessed a speed rating of VR; greater than 149 mph. However, it did not have a rating for its top speed at that time. Today the tire has a Y speed rating (which has a capability of 186 mph or 300 km/h). The tire's sidewall still displays its original 'VR' lettering, providing historic authenticity with the description 245/45 VR 16. Nonetheless, upon closer inspection, the inscription of '245/45 R 16 86Y' can be observed, signifying its adherence to modern driving laws.

The N-classified tires undergo rigorous testing to meet Porsche's standards and have been explicitly authorized for use on their vehicles. N classified tires offer the best possible performance for Porsche vehicles and are the brand's recommended choice.   • 928 GT (1989-90) was fitted with 225/50 R 16 PIRELLI CINTURATO ™ P7 (Front) & 245/45 R 16 PIRELLI CINTURATO ™ P7 (Rear).

    • Porsche 944:

  • 944 Turbo (1986-1991) was fitted with 205/55 R 16 PIRELLI CINTURATO ™ P7 (Front) & 245/45 R 16 PIRELLI CINTURATO ™ P7 (Rear).
  • 944 S2 (1990-1991) was fitted with 205/55 R 16 PIRELLI CINTURATO ™ P7 (Front) & 245/45 R 16 PIRELLI CINTURATO ™ P7 (Rear).
  • 944 S2 Cabriolet (1990-1991) was fitted with 205/55 R 16 PIRELLI CINTURATO ™ P7 (Front) & 225/50 R 16 PIRELLI CINTURATO ™ P7 (Rear) or 245/45 R 16 PIRELLI CINTURATO ™ P7 (Rear).

    • Porsche 911:

  • 911 (from 1985) had a 16” wheel option with 205/55 R 16 PIRELLI CINTURATO ™ P7 (Front), 225/50 R 16 PIRELLI CINTURATO ™ P7 (Front) & 245/45 R 16 PIRELLI CINTURATO ™ P7 (Rear).
  • 911 SC was fitted with 205/55 R 16 PIRELLI CINTURATO ™ P7 (Front) and 225/50 R 16 PIRELLI CINTURATO ™ P7 (Rear). Later models were fitted with 245/45 R 16 PIRELLI CINTURATO ™ P7 (Rear) to some cars with 9” rims on the rear.
  • 911 Super Carrera had 16” wheels with 245/45 R 16 PIRELLI CINTURATO ™ P7 (Rear) fitted as standard in some countries such as the UK.

    • Porsche Carrera:

  • Carrera Super Sport 3.2 (1985-‘89) was fitted with 205/55 R 16 PIRELLI CINTURATO ™ P7 (Front) & 245/45 R 16 PIRELLI CINTURATO ™ P7 (Rear).

    • Nissan 300ZX:

  • Nissan 300ZX Z32 Turbo had 225/50-16 (Front) and 245/45-16 (Rear) tires and can be fitted with 225/50 R 16 PIRELLI CINTURATO ™ P7 and 245/45 R 16 PIRELLI CINTURATO ™ P7.

    • Toyota Supra:

  • 1997 Supra model was recommended to use 245/45 R 16 PIRELLI CINTURATO ™ P7 (Rear) and had a rear tire size of 245/45-16.
