In 1968, Pirelli introduced the CN36 Cinturato radial tire, marking their initial venture into the realm of low-profile tires. The 215/60 R 15 PIRELLI CINTURATO CN36 N was Pirelli's first ultra-low profile tire, designed for use with the the Porsche 911 RSR in 1972. This tire was the first 60% profile tire to be fitted to production cars.

Additionally, Pirelli developed CN36 tires with a full 80% profile, such as the 165 R 13 PIRELLI CINTURATO CN36 and the 165 R 15 PIRELLI CINTURATO™ CN36 for early Porsche models. In a comprehensive Classic Tire Test conducted by a German magazine, the PIRELLI CINTURATO™ CN36 emerged as the clear winner, surpassing its competitors in every aspect.

Many of these modern Pirelli CN36 tires have been developed with and officially approved by Porsche as the optimal choice for their classic vehicles, further emphasizing their superior quality and performance.

In 1973, Porsche introduced the RS and Carrera 911 models, equipping them with the 185/70 R 15 PIRELLI CINTURATO CN36 N tires for the front wheels. As the design evolved, Porsche adopted wider rear wheels to accommodate the 215/60 VR15 PIRELLI CINTURATO CN36 N tires, which are now being reproduced by Pirelli with Porsche's coveted 'N' homologation. This certification signifies that Porsche has rigorously tested and approved these tires as the optimal choice for their vehicles.

The enduring compatibility between this tire and classic Porsche cars allowed Porsche to continue using the 185/70 R 15 PIRELLI CINTURATO CN36 N tires on the rear wheels well into the 1980s, including the 911 SC models. Initially, Pirelli produced the 215/60 WR 15 PIRELLI CINTURATO CN36 N tires as tube-type variants during their early days. However, tire manufacturers quickly realized that innertubes were not suitable for tires with a profile like the 215/60 WR 15. Innertubes are reserved for tires with profiles of 70% and above. Simultaneously, wheel manufacturers made significant advancements in enhancing their rim profiles by incorporating safety ribs, thereby rendering them more compatible with tubeless tires like the 215/60 WR 15 PIRELLI CINTURATO CN36 N. These developments marked a significant evolution in both tire and wheel technology, ensuring safer and more efficient performance on the road.

PIRELLI CINTURATO ™ CN36 Tire Test


In a test conducted by German classic car magazine 'Auto Bild Klassik' four different classic tires were evaluated using a Porsche 911 E2.4 as the test car. The PIRELLI CINTURATO CN36 N stood out as an exceptional tire, rated "exemplary" and the clear winner by Auto Bild Klassik. The Vredestein Sprint Classic received a "good" rating, while the Michelin Collection XWX had wet performance shortcomings, rated "satisfactory." The Blockley Radial TL performed poorly in wet disciplines, earning a "not recommended" rating.

This evaluation highlights the superior performance of the CN36 N, which not only earned the highest rating but also secured the official endorsement of Porsche.
